Our April Health TechNet meeting focused on new privacy requirements and strategies for coping with them, as well as the healthcare reform legislation and implementation process.
The meeting featured the presentation of Douglas Grimm of the Pillsbury health law group, along with Cathy Gomez, Compliance Officer for Fairfax Neonatal Associates, one of the leading neonatology and pediatric providers in the mid-Atlantic area. Cathy has also had experience as a privacy officer for a large hospital system.
Both speakers provided us with a briefing on the new regulations implementing the HITECH provisions of the Stimulus Bill (ARRA) and new requirements for both the privacy and security aspects of health information technology. With last month’s passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the health care industry expects further changes in this arena. They also provided us with information on key privacy and security aspects of the new legislation, identifying and discussing some important issues raised, and exploring their potential effects on members of the health care provider and information technology community with the assistance of representatives from a prominent physician specialty group.
The presentation of the speakers was followed by an active discussion among our members.
