Increasing Number of Meaningful Use Audits and How to Deal with Them
5/16/14
Back
Our May 16 meeting was held at Nelson Mullins’ offices in D.C. It focused on the increasing number of meaningful use audits and how to deal with them. Current estimates are that over ten percent of all providers will be subject to audits of their attestations and other compliance with meaningful use standards by CMS outside contractors. If proper documentation is not presented, providers face penalties and the need to return funds received from the government. Our presentation and discussion featured Jennifer Moore, Principal at Health Care Information Consultants (HCIC) and Interim CIO of Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Maryland, which has just been through a meaningful use audit. Attorneys from the Nelson Mullins Compliance Practice also shared their advice on how to prepare for audits in advance, cope with the auditors when they are on site, and otherwise ensure that best practices are being implemented in physician offices and hospital systems in case of an audit or other inquiries from the government. We also provided updates on other current regulatory and legislative issues as we approach the midpoint of an active year in healthcare politics, with many changes in the making.
