At our meeting on June 15, 2012, we heard from several organizations who are involved in various stages of forming Health Information Exchanges in Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, and Maryland. For example, the Medical Society of Northern Virginia is embarking on a program to assist all of its members, large and small, in becoming connected to electronic medical records and helping them obtain the necessary hardware and software to do so through selective vendors. In addition, several area hospitals are undertaking similar efforts, with varying results. We discussed both the technological as well as some interesting “political” issues involved, and reached some practical observations about how and whether these efforts will succeed.
